Join us as we uncover the lost histories of South Asian female migrants in London, and discover the untold stories of Ayah's in Hackney.
Hosted at Hackney Museum, this event is in honour of the former site of the nearby Ayah's Home, which has been shortlisted for a Blue Plaque from English Heritage. Ayah's (nannies) played an important role in accompanying English families on voyage between India and Britain. On arrival to England they were often abandoned, without pay, with no formal contract, and no guaranteed return passage to their home countries.
On 7th March there will be a series of events which shed light on this forgotten part of migration history in the local area, particular regarding South Asian Women. Join us for a range of activities including a Lost Histories panel, a poetry workshop, and a Poetry Performance and Open Mic, hosted by Yoniverse.
There will also be a visual exhibition and information booth, in association with Hackney Museum and the East End Women's Museum.
